Industrial design registration begins with filing Form ID-1, accompanied by graphical representations or photographs of the design. Upon receipt, the Registrar conducts a minimum filing check and issues an acknowledgment.


The application then undergoes formal examination to verify compliance with statutory requirements, followed by substantive examination to assess novelty and registrability. If defects are identified, correction notices are issued, and the applicant must respond within prescribed timelines.


Once the application passes examination, the design is registered, published, and a Certificate of Registration is issued. Registered designs are protected for an initial term of five years, renewable for two further five-year periods.
